Arianne Hartono Improves to 10-1 at No. 1 Singles

AUBURN, Ala. - In a match that came down to the last court, the No. 12 Ole Miss women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss at No. 18 Auburn Saturday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.

After senior Arianne Hartono finished off a straight set win on court one against Auburn's Alizee Michaud to tie the match, all eyes turned to court six, where sophomore Alexa Bortles looked to serve out the second set against Tiger sophomore Georgie Axon.

Axon won the first set, but Bortles raced out to a 5-1 lead in the second and had set points, before Axon finished off a comeback, to take the match 6-3, 7-5 and clinch the win for Auburn.

Doubles proved to be the difference, as Auburn closed out a quick win on court three and held on for a 7-5 win on court two to clinch the first point. The Rebels led 6-5 at No. 1 doubles.

Tea Jandric and Anna Vrbenska both picked up straight set wins on courts four and five to give the Rebels a 2-1 lead.

Auburn answered with wins on courts two and three to lead 3-2, before Hartono won her match to tie it.

Courtside with Head Coach Mark Beyers... "Tough loss to a very good Auburn team. We definitely had our chances both in doubles as well as singles. In these SEC battles, it's going to come down to a few points here or there."

Next up...The Rebels return home to host No. 17 Kentucky Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center, followed by No. 4 Vanderbilt next Saturday at 1 p.m.
