Ole Miss’ (40-25) offense continued its hot streak on the night as they clinched the three-game sweep. The Rebels came close to matching the total number of runs put up against Sam Houston State (21) in the Oxford Regional in 2007.
“The guys have played loose all weekend,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “We played well in all phases of the games.”
Junior Thomas Dillard and Anthony Servideo both launched home runs in the win.
Dillard, an Oxford native, delivered his first home run of the night on the opening pitch, sending it over the student section in right field. He then got a grand slam in the fourth that put the Rebels up 12-2. He finished the night going 3-for-3 with three extra-base knocks and came one RBI shy (7) of tying his career high against Tulane.
“We wanted to go out there and put pressure on them from the first pitch on,” Dillard said.
Servideo shot his towering solo homer in the seventh. Along with the three zingers in the game, Ole Miss pounded out a total of 20 hits. Junior Cole Zabowski finished the game going 4-for-5 with three runs scored.
The Rebels’ starter Gunnar Hoglund held his own on the mound against the Gamecocks as he surrendered two runs (one earned) on five hits and had five strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Hoglund picked up the win.
Bianco called on the arms of Houston Roth, Connor Green and Max Cioffi to close out the Regional. Roth worked 1.2 as he gave up two hits and struck out two batters. Green came in for a frame and surrendered a run on two hits. Cioffi entered in the ninth and gave up Jacksonville’s last run of the night.
Ole Miss is headed to the Fayetteville Super Regional to face the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Razorbacks are the No. 5 national seed. They took down TCU 6-0.
“They are a really solid national team. We just have to go in there and compete,” Dillard said.
The dates of the super regional matchup will be announced today.
