Ole Miss Football Mid-Week Practice Report

Ole Miss and Texas A&M will both likely have to battle bad weather Saturday night when the two teams meet in Oxford.

The forecast for Oxford is calling for a 90 percent chance of rain with temperatures in the mid to high 30s and winds up to 17 miles per hour.

The Rebels are aware of the pending elements, including adding wet ball drills to the practice routine.

"You work it some," Luke said. "It's more of your level of focus has to go up and being able to handle that. You do work some with wet ball drills just to emphasize your focus. Other than that, you've just got to go execute. The good thing is both teams have to play in the same conditions."

Luke described this week of practice as good.

"We've shortened practice down a little bit. We went the first half of the practice in pads (on Wednesday), we took the pads off second, just trying to get prepared and get our work done, but try to keep them fresh with two games here in this next week coming up. Just trying to take care of the guys, but I thought the work has been spirited. It's been good," Luke shared.

Sophomore offensive lineman Alex Givens has returned to the practice field and will be ready to go Saturday versus Texas A&M.

"He's practiced. He was full contact today. He went all the way through the (concussion) protocol and was live in full pads today. He'll be out there," said Luke.

After Saturday's game with Texas A&M, the Rebels will have precious little time to prepare for Thanksgiving night's Egg Bowl showdown at Mississippi State.

"You've got to do the best you can," Luke said. "You can't do a whole bunch of pads and all of that. It's a lot more mental work and getting the guys back recovered. Part of it is it's late in the season, just trying to keep their bodies fresh through this weekend and next week. I think all kind of marries together."

Former Ole Miss head coach Tommy Tuberville will serve as an analyst for ESPN2 for Saturday's game. Luke played for Tuberville at Ole Miss.

"He was my coach. It will be kind of cool to sit down with him again. We haven't really spent a whole bunch of time together with career paths and all that stuff. It will be interesting to sit down with him, for sure," Luke said.

"What he did best was his staff and the staff he hired. he was a really good manager. He was really good with the boosters and handling all of that. I think I learned a lot from him. I obviously had a great four years under him. Coming through the probation my first two years (as a player) has taught me a lot on how to deal with certain things...playing for each other and your teammates. There's a lot of correlation you can take and experiences to play through," Luke said.

Ole Miss and Texas A&M kick off at 6 p.m. CT Saturday.
