Elite 2021 OF James Wood Talks MSU Commitment

St. John's College (MD) High School class of 2021 outfielder James Wood participated in the July 30th Mississippi State Half Day Prospect Camp. He came to the camp with numerous offers but not one from Mississippi State. That quickly changed about a week later.

"After their camp, I had an event in Georgia (the Future Games) and the coaches were able to come down there and see me. They made an offer after that," said Wood, who is rated the 107th best player in the class of 2021 by the Perfect Game scouting service.

Up until the Mississippi State offer, Wood was being patient with the recruiting process. But that quickly changed after the Bulldog offer.

"I was being patient and taking my time but after the camp and talking to (Mississippi State head) Coach (Chris) Lemonis on the phone, I just didn't see a need to wait any longer," said Wood, who bats left and throws from the right side. "I was ready to make a decision because I knew Mississippi State was the place, so why wait?"

The day he committed was one that he has a difficult time describing due to how emotional it was for him.

"I don't even know how to explain it when I committed. I was happy, excited, thrilled, a whole bunch of positive emotions," said Wood. "When I was talking to Coach Lemonis he seemed pretty excited. It was a good feeling to hear how excited he was."

The talented outfielder explained why he felt Mississippi State was the best fit for him.

"I chose Mississippi State because of the family aspect. Their fans are a big part of the family aspect of the whole program," said Wood, who saw the fanbase in person at the second game of the Starkville Super Regional. "I like the coaches a lot. I have a good relationship with (Coach Kyle) Cheesebrough (my primary recruiter). The coaches and the family aspect were the two main things that I liked the most."

Wood had a big final list of schools that he was interested in prior to committing to Mississippi State.

"My final list included (East Carolina), South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech," said Wood, who is rated a 9.5 by Perfect game, which means he is potential highest level to elite college prospect and a potential 5th to 10th round draft pick in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft.

Now that he is committed to Mississippi State, he realizes he will need to work even harder prior to attending Mississippi State.

"I definitely have to keep working," said Wood, who is 6-6, 205 pounds. "That is the most important thing. I can't expect to just get better by sitting on the couch watching tv. I have to lift (weights) and get stronger."

Wood is a very projectable hitter who Perfect Game says has "massive power potential."
