USA Baseball Unveils 2019 Collegiate National Team Training Camp Roster
June 26, 2019
DURHAM, N.C. - USA Baseball unveiled the 2019 Collegiate National Team training camp roster on Wednesday, highlighted by the return of Patrick Bailey (NC State), Max Meyer (Minnesota) and Spencer Torkelson (Arizona State) to Team USA for the second consecutive year. The 2019 Collegiate National Team will host a series of Red vs. Blue games, an exhibition against the Coastal Plain League (CPL) Select team and a five-game international friendship series against Cuba before traveling to Taiwan and Japan to finish the summer.
Eight of the 36 training camp athletes have already secured spots on the final 24-man roster for the international friendship series against Cuba, Chinese Taipei and Japan. The remaining 28 players will vie for spots on the final roster which will be announced on July 1.
"I am extremely excited to get to camp and get started," said 2019 Collegiate National Team Manager Dan McDonnell. "It will be special to put the USA uniform on again while getting to work with the best players in college baseball. I'm looking forward to watching them compete and come together as one to take on Cuba, Taiwan and Japan."
Seven alumni of USA Baseball will return to the stars and stripes in 2019. Bailey is making his third appearance with Team USA after competing with the 2018 Collegiate National Team and winning a gold medal at the COPABE Pan Am "AAA" Championships with the 2016 18U National Team. Logan Allen (FIU) was also a member of that gold medal-winning 2016 18U National Team, while Doug Nikhazy (Ole Miss) will don the red, white and blue again in 2019 after participating with the 15U National Team in 2014.
In addition, Cole Wilcox (Georgia) and Kumar Rocker (Vanderbilt) will reunite for Team USA after winning a World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-18 Baseball World Cup gold medal with the 2017 18U National Team.
Three members of the 2019 Collegiate National Team have also participated in the USA Baseball National Team Development Program (NTDP). The NTDP offers athletes an opportunity to connect with USA Baseball staff to better prepare for future national team experience. Nikazy trained with the 2013 14U NTDP, while Rocker and Holden Powell were members of the 17U NTDP in 2016.
The 2019 Collegiate National Team schedule will begin with a four-game intrasquad Red vs. Blue series from June 27-30 at the National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. Team USA will then follow with a game against the CPL Select on July 1 at the National Training Complex before hosting the 8th Annual USA vs. Cuba International Friendship Series July 2-6.
The five-game series will kick off at LP Frans Stadium in Hickory, North Carolina, followed by games at BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DBAP) in Durham, North Carolina, and the National Training Complex. The series will then return to the DBAP for the finale on July 6.
Following the 8th Annual USA vs. Cuba International Friendship Series, Team USA will travel to Taichung, Taiwan, for the 19th USA vs. Chinese Taipei International Friendship Series from July 9-12 and close out its summer schedule with the 43rd USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series, which will take place in various cities throughout Japan from July 16-21.
Louisville Head Coach Dan McDonnell was named the manager of the 2019 Collegiate National Team in July 2018. He will be joined on staff by assistant coaches Mark Kingston (South Carolina) and Tony Skole (The Citadel), pitching coach Greg Moore (Saint Mary's) and bench coach Dave Turgeon (Pittsburgh Pirates).
Three of the 8th USA vs. Cuba International Friendship Series games will be streamed live on USABaseball.com and the remaining seven domestic Collegiate National Team's games will be broadcasted on USA Baseball's Facebook channel. Stay tuned to USABaseball.com, and follow @USABaseballCNT on Twitter, for the latest information.

Freshman Alex Binelas and sophomores Reid Detmers, Michael Kirian and Bobby Miller will represent the Cardinals at training camp with the hopes of making the final 24-man roster.
\n\n
Training camp is underway at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., with the four-game Red-Blue Series set to take place Thursday through Sunday. The USA Collegiate National Team, managed this summer by Louisville head coach Dan McDonnell, is scheduled to play a five-game series against Cuba July 2-6 at multiple sites across North Carolina. They will then travel to Taichung, Taiwan for five games against Chinese Taipei July 9-12 and wrap up with five games at Japan July 16-21.
\n\n
Louisville has had 11 student-athletes compete with the USA Collegiate National Team previously, most recently with Devin Hairston and Brendan McKay in 2016. The four players are the most the Cardinals have had with the team in any one year.
\n\n
A freshman All-American in 2019, Binelas had a standout season for the Cardinals in his first year. The Oak Creek, Wis., native finished the season with a .291 average, 14 doubles, 14 home runs and 59 RBIs. He was the first Louisville freshman to hit double-digit home runs since Chris Dominguez in 2007. Binelas was an All-ACC second team selection and earned freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the NCBWA.
\n\n
Detmers turned in arguably the most prolific single season by a pitcher in Louisville baseball history in 2019. The sophomore was 13-4 overall with a 2.78 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 113.1 innings. His 13 wins matched UofL's single-season record, while he went flying past the previous single-season mark of 146 strikeouts. Detmers garnered All-America honors from six different organizations, including first team recognition by the ABCA, D1Baseball, NCBWA and Perfect Game, and became the seventh Louisville player to be named the conference pitcher of the year.
\n\n
Kirian had a breakout campaign in his second year with the Cardinals. The southpaw led UofL with a 1.69 ERA while going 3-1 with five saves in 26 overall appearances. Kirian gave up just six earned runs with 42 strikeouts in 32 innings. The New Reigel, Ohio, native kept his strong work going in the postseason, picking up a win and a save in the NCAA Louisville Regional and adding a save in Louisville's win over Auburn at the NCAA College World Series.
\n\n
Starting as the closer for the Cardinals before moving into the starting rotation, Miller amassed a 7-1 mark in 2019 with a 3.83 ERA and a pair of saves in 80 innings of work. The sophomore was a force for the Cardinals during its run in the NCAA Championship, turning in three excellent starts. Miller tallied a victory in an elimination game in the NCAA Regional against Indiana, before twirling eight no-hit innings against East Carolina in the Super Regional round to send Louisville to the College World Series. In the CWS, the right-hander allowed just one run in four innings against Auburn before having his start cut short by rain.

Williams put up impressive numbers in a breakout sophomore campaign, embracing his role as a cleanup hitter an honorable mention nod on the Pac-12 All-Conference team while also earning a spot on the league's All-Defensive roster.  Williams finished with a .333 batting average with 53 RBIs - easily a career high in the category. He had just 20 total RBIs last season.
\n\n
When he did get RBIs, he tended to get a lot of them as he logged 16 multi-RBI games this season and while finishing second on the team with nine games with three or more RBIs. Williams homered four times this year and recorded 12 doubles and three triples. He slugged .474 on the season - nearly 150 points higher than his freshman total of .333. With 19 extra-base hits on the year, he easily far surpassed his freshman total of nine.
\n\n
The sophomore was incredible when falling behind in counts this season, posting a .409 average (18-of-44) when facing 1-2 counts. Of his 71 hits on the year, 41 came while trailing in the count and 20 of his 53 RBIs (.377) came when falling behind in counts.
\n\n
He was 37-of-105 (.352) on two-strike hitting on the year - striking out a team-low 28 times while walking 33 times, making him the only player on the team with more walks than strikeouts. The sophomore was incredible at advancing baserunners this season, second on the team with a .593 advance percentage with 73 advancements on 123 opportunities.
\n\n
Defensively, Williams finished second in the Pac-12 with 149 defensive assists this season. He  helped turn 36 double plays this season, which was good for fourth overall in the Pac-12 and first among non-first basemen. He finished with an impressive .967 fielding percentage on the year. He was named a member of the Pac-12 All-Defensive team as a result of his prowess on that side of the ball.
\n\n
Williams joins an illustrious list of Sun Devils to represent their country over the years, including Floyd Bannister (1975), Bob Horner (1976), Kevin Romine (1981), Oddibe McDowell (1984), Dustin Pedroia (2002 and 2003) and current MLB players Mike Leake (2008), Deven Marrero (2011) and Trevor Williams (2012).
\n\n
He will join up with sophomore teammate Spencer Torkelson on the Team USA roster this season, with Torkelson being named to the squad earlier this season. This will mark the first time a pair of teammates have been a part of the Collegiate National Team since Deven Marrero and Brady Rodgers paired up in 2011.
\n\n
In total, 35 Sun Devils have been selected a total 39 times to represent the United States with Torkelson and Williams' additions this summer. Only USC and Stanford have more all-time selections than ASU.

The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, led by Louisville head coach Dan McDonnell, will participate in a series of four intrasquad exhibition games and a game against the Coastal Plain Select before announcing the 26-man roster prior to the 8th USA vs Cuba International Friendship Series that will take place July 2-6 in Cary, Charlotte, Durham and Hickory, N.C.

\n\n
Cowser is the third Bearkat to ever earn an invitation to try out for Team USA, joining Kevin Renz (1984) and Greg Kubes (1997). He is seeking to become the first player from the Southland Conference to make his way onto the team since UTA's Michael Choice did so in 2009.
\n\n
The invitation adds onto a banner freshman season for the Cy Ranch HS product where he ranked second in the SLC in batting average (.361), fourth in slugging percentage (.602), third in on-base percentage (.450) and fourth in runs scored (50). He also ranked third in the SLC in hits (78) and RBI (54), leading the SLC with seven triples and ranking seventh with 17 doubles to go with seven homers.
\n\n
In addition to being named the SLC Hitter of the Year and a first team all-Southland performer, Cowser has already earned Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball Magazine and Perfect Game, while also earning an all-region nod from the ABCA.
